Kidney cancer usually develops as a single mass within the kidney. The kidney may contain more than one tumor, but it is rare for cancer to occur in both kidneys. There are different types of kidney cancer. About 90% of kidney cancers are renal cell cancers. They start in the cortex of the kidney. Rarely, very young children and adults develop a type of kidney cancer called nephroblastoma.
